Munitions and Hazardous Waste Remediation Project

Munitions and Hazardous Waste Remediation Project

For this federal project, CAPE supported the critical cleanup of munitions and hazardous debris at the Waipio Peninsula Confined Disposal Facility (CDF) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

NAVFAC Pacific awarded the contract to CAPE to address over 122,000 cubic yards of dredged material from Cells #2 and #3, containing remnants of war and debris from the 1944 Landing Ship Tank explosion. Using specialized equipment and innovative processes, CAPE’s team meticulously removed, assessed, and disposed of hazardous materials while recycling safe materials, ensuring both environmental restoration and safety.

CAPE’s field team worked closely with NAVFAC throughout the project, which required precise planning, sequencing, and execution to manage the historic munitions and debris safely. Our work at this site was featured in the Department of the Navy’s “2024 Year In Review” video (see 1:18 mark), with a Navy contact stating, “I can emphatically state the reason this story made it in the year review was due to the performance of CAPE and your entire onsite team!”

This contract highlighted the value of small business contributions to enhancing safety and restoring the environment. CAPE is proud to be that small business — delivering innovative solutions and meticulous execution to support NAVFAC’s mission.
