Working within very short construction seasons, CAPE performed remediation and environmental restoration at 11 sites that were part of deactivated Radio Relay Stations for the Alaska Air Command. We worked with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the EPA to comply with CERCLA throughout the environmental cleanup. We installed erosion and sediment controls, excavated contaminated soil, removed hazardous waste, arranged for transportation & disposal (T&D), and performed long-term monitoring (LTM). CAPE obtained site closure of six sites, Remedy in Place for two sites, and supported LTM at three sites. The project was performed in remote and austere locations in the Aleutian Islands, requiring significant logistics management. All personnel, equipment, and material were either chartered or transported by commercial air or barge. On one island, CAPE constructed a base camp including living and dining quarters and sanitary facilities.
