With 37 years of experience-(all with CAPE!)-Chris Karg has built a career rooted in dedication and vision. He and his sister were the first in their immediate family to graduate from college, and it was her guidance that led him to pursue a degree in Safety and Occupational Health at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Following graduation, Chris entered the safety field in 1988, which at that time offered three main career paths: industrial/construction settings, insurance companies, and consulting. He ultimately chose CAPE (then Environmental Management Inc.), drawn by the opportunity to relocate to Atlanta and work on projects across the country. Despite advice to join a more established firm, Chris took a leap of faith with CAPE—one that has defined his professional journey ever since.

Chris's initial role at CAPE involved conducting asbestos surveys, an experience he describes as invaluable, not only for the work itself but for the lasting relationships he built. Over the years, Chris has held various positions at CAPE, from an entry level employee to President. Each role has been an opportunity for growth, often arising unexpectedly. Chris's career at CAPE is a testament to the exciting opportunities that small companies offer for growth and development. His roles have included Project Lead, Project Manager, Owner, Branch Manager, Regional Manager, Program Manager, Business Development Manager, Business Unit Leader, Vice President, Sr. VP, Leadership Team, Board Member (CAPE and JV’s), Board Chairman (JV’s), and now, President.

Mentoring has been a significant part of Chris's career. He has been fortunate to have outstanding mentors and continues to benefit from their guidance. Chris is hopeful that he has been able to return the favor by mentoring others. Professional certification and continuous learning have also played a crucial role in his journey. Obtaining and maintaining the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification opened doors for numerous opportunities. Chris strongly encourages others to pursue certifications and place a high value on learning.

Chris's leadership style has evolved from being 'ME' centered to 'WE' centered, emphasizing the importance of knowing one's limitations and seeking help when needed. Every interaction is an opportunity to represent oneself and CAPE positively. Looking ahead, Chris's vision for CAPE involves the next generation driving exciting growth and professional development, always guided by the company's Vision, Mission, Values, and Culture. Chris believes that when CAPE has been at its best, it has stayed true to its culture, creating an environment that supports growth for both the company and its individuals.

"We always do our best, sometimes fall short, and learn from those experiences."
